Meet Our Nonprofits: Summit Liberty House

…Previously on the blog, we took a look at one of the nonprofits benefiting from the Halloween Charity Ball this year—the Blick Center, which has been proudly serving those with disabilities in Summit County for over fifty years. Today, our other chosen nonprofit organization gets a turn in the spotlight.

Summit Liberty House—a program of Family & Community Services—is rather new compared to other nonprofits in the area, but that says nothing about its tremendous importance. Founded only a year ago, in September of 2018, Summit Liberty House is the county’s first institution that has been created for the purpose of housing homeless female veterans and their children. They offer services such as:

  • Development of life skills

  • Assistance in job planning and readiness

  • Stability in housing

  • Counseling, support groups, and specialized parenting support

  • Transportation services

  • Crisis intervention

These can be absolutely crucial services to women and children going through trying times, but this list is not all-encompassing. Summit Liberty House offers additional services to those benefiting based on their specific needs and circumstances.

Above everything else, Summit Liberty House holds the intention of empowering female veterans and their children in a way that focuses on finding solutions to the various problems in their lives. This is such a noble cause.

The building, located in East Akron, was acquired by the Summit County Land Bank and donated to Family & Community Services, and it has been renovated to create four apartments for the female veterans. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for September 26 at 11:00 a.m. and is open to the public. Tours and refreshments will be available at the event.

Women veterans are one of the fastest-growing homeless populations in the US, which makes the work of Summit Liberty House that much more important.

If you’re interested in donating to this important cause, a wish list can be found on their Facebook page  and consists of items such as kitchenware, toiletries, bedding, and clothing. Otherwise, as with the Blick Center, you can also simply be sure to purchase your ticket to the Halloween Charity Ball, which will ensure that Summit Liberty House benefits at the very same time that you enjoy a Halloween bash. See you there!
